Order a packed lunch at reception and enjoy a morning or afternoon walking – the route will take approximately 3.5 hours at a good pace. Walking footwear is recommended as paths may be slippery or uneven. This map is only a guide as access to footpaths may change.
From The Lodge cross the A149 and go down Sea Lane and cross over Wodehouse Road heading towards the sea, passing between the Lifeboat Station and café. Turn right at the café and pick up the Acorn signs of the Coastal Path, immediately past the Golf Course Clubhouse on the right, turn right on sandy path (beware of golfers teeing off) and cross the course, turn left, walk 100 yards and join the public footpath on the left between the River Hun and the golf practice ground. Continue along the path, past static caravans, to a road, cross and continue along path opposite with River Hun on right. At end of path keep right on tarmac road and cross footbridge on right before Holme Dunes, go through gate. (approx. 2.2 miles)
Follow the path across the water meadows of Redwell Marsh heading for Holme village, after the path bears left go through a metal gate and follow the path to the main village road, turn left along Kirk Gate to pass the Inn and the church, at the end of the street turn right then keep going straight ahead to the main road. Cross the A149 to Chalkpit Lane and follow the track uphill to the end, turn right along the track and continue until you join the main road. Turn left and pass the Peddars Way path on the right and the windmill (no sails), keep on ahead to end and turn left onto Thornham Road (option to turn right and follow road into Ringstead Village for 9-mile walk). Continue along road past Bluestone Farm on right and turn right at Courtyard Farm Circular Walk sign and follow path slightly downhill to end. Turn right and follow the road ahead to end at junction keep on ahead to join the major road, turn left away from village towards Sedgeford (9-mile walk joins again here). Walk past duck pond, buildings and woods and at end of woods turn right into Ringstead Downs via track. This area is a Nature Reserve managed by the Norfolk Wildlife Trust.
Walk right through the downs enjoying the flowers and butterflies, typical of this chalk environment. Continue through Downs Farm then bear right along a wide farm road (formerly the main road to Hunstanton before the ‘new’ town and resort were built). At the next junction there is a choice of route – on Thursdays turn right and follow the path straight ahead, keeping the gatehouse to the left and walk through the park, keeping to the well-defined path. Once past the impressive buildings of Hunstanton Hall, join the tarmac drive and follow it round to the left to Old Hunstanton Church, just past the church and immediately before the duck pond go through a gate on the left and follow the path to Chapel Bank, turn right down the road and join the 11-mile walk.
On all other days turn left and continue on farm track veering left at junction then up slight hill. Take the footpath, Lovers Lane, on the right, which is before Lodge Farm, and this lane crosses fields to Chapel Bank. Turn right and follow road for 0.3 miles. Pass house (Woden) and approx 500 yards on left onto Public Footpath and continue passing The Old Schoolhouse Hair Company.
Go through gate and take left onto pavement of A149 and continue up hill to The Lodge.
